Weekend in Delhi

Last night went out for drinks at the Crowne Plaza hotel with some colleagues. I don't know them well, but we had fun.

Today I struggled to wake up for dance class. I found a class in Shahpur Jat by a guy named Rashid. It is mostly an improv, modern class. He doesn't do any instruction because there are too many levels in the class. I was tired today. He had us start in partners. The one in front used their back as the source of movement. It was a nice way to move despite my back getting tired.

Yuvraj and Robin has hit 7, 6's and scored more than 70 runs on 30 balls. It is spectacular!!!!! I've never watched cricket before. I didn't realize it could be so exciting. Although Ritesh and Kathi make it quite exciting. Ritesh is on the edge of his seat and stressing. Then Robin got out. A sad state. However they end at 188.

I'm learning that there are 2 batters at the same time. If they make one run, they switch places. There are 6 balls per over and each gets 20 overs. You don't necessarily have to have them all bat. If it goes into the stands it 6 runs. Hitting the outer edge is 4. The fielding team is trying to hit the wicket. If they catch the ball on the fly after the batter hits, the batter is out.

Vizag: clean city by the sea

Visakhapatnam (or Vizag) wasn't on the radar. It is one of the cleanest places we'd been India. I had no idea it was a city in South East India or how to pronounce it. Only learned it existed because when we tried to get our boarding passes in the airport in Sri Lanka to come to India we needed to show an outbound flight. Walking across the boarder to Myanmar wasn't accepted. Next time will remember to book on a site that allows cancellation after 24 hours, but in the early morning panic that didn't happen. Then it turned out to be overly complicated and expensive to cross overland from India to Myanmar, so we decided to use the flights to Kuala Lumpur and come in from the South. Vizag was now in the itinerary. Get there We took a train from Puri to Khurda junction. And then transfered to a sleeper to Vizag. There is a waiting room in Khurda upstairs to charge phones and sit. Konark and Puri: see the Sun temple

A site noted that the sun temple at Konark is in the top 10 architecturally. It was on the way to Vizag, so seemed like a good place to stop and boy was the temple impressive. Get in It's a 8 hour train ride from Kolkata to Puri. Arriving at 12am wasn't ideal as tuk tuk drivers were limited and many guest houses full or closed. Eat, drink, sleep - The Pink House is a relic from the 70s. I'm guessing the cockroach in the bathroom has been there that long as well based on its size. Rooms are very basic, somewhat clean, and ours along the walkway was loud. However for Rs. 600-800, you can't complain too much. We also had decent food there. What we did - Puri beach is sadly a mess. Children playing on the beach and using it as a toilet (you had to watch your step). There is trash all over, the only upside of which is the boys use the styrofoam to make boats. Dude asking for photo on the Puri beach.  Children playing with self-made styrofoam boats ...

Varkala: a vacation from being a traveler

After traveling for 5 months, we were both feeling g a bit road weary. I felt like a sea sponge that needed to be wrung out in order to absorb more historically significant, mindblowingly beautiful, culturally complex places. Varkala seemed like a decent spot to do that as Wikitravel notes it as being recently developed for tourism. I would say it's extremely developed as the cliff is packed with guest houses, restaurants, gift shops, clothing shops, money changers, and convenience stores. However, it worked for 3 nights and then we jumped ship to a quieter spot just north where you can still find fishing bungalows and tourists helping the fishermen bring in the nets. Varkala is good for the following - Internation cusines. Some restaurants boast about 5... There are a bunch of Tibetan places that were tasty.
