Li meet brunch, brunch meet Li

Durand and I introduced Li to our weekly ritual. While we mix up the venue, brunch is a Sunday past time, involving plates of food and wine or martinis (Piazzo).

This week we went to a new one, West View, at the Sheraton. It was up on the roof and what a view. Slightly scary, because you could really see the smog, but nice to be able to look out over a large green area and other parts of Delhi.

The help yourself part was small: cheese, cold cuts, olives, salads. Then came the ordering of 4 courses. I had beet gazpacho, some marinated vege thing, chili prawns, and then shared tiramisu and chocolate mousse with Li for dessert. Oh and lots of champagne, plus a glass of white wine for kicks. The red was bad.

After we headed to the 'Foot Care' massage center for Shiatsu. The massages are decent. Deep, but almost pecking in nature because not enough time is spent. If they slowed down, I'd be very happy. We checked went looking for 'Gandhi' the movie, but they didn't have it, so we got 'Water' instead.

We discovered a chic-ish restaurant next door and got a drink to check it out. The inside was nice, but facing the video provided views of Sbarro, Ruby Tuesdays and some other US restaurant.

On the way home, Durand suggested a night cap, so we headed to the Crowne Plaza, Today Gurgaon for Guiness. Li was amazed at the lifestyle. Note, the last 2 stops aren't typical.

Vizag: clean city by the sea

Visakhapatnam (or Vizag) wasn't on the radar. It is one of the cleanest places we'd been India. I had no idea it was a city in South East India or how to pronounce it. Only learned it existed because when we tried to get our boarding passes in the airport in Sri Lanka to come to India we needed to show an outbound flight. Walking across the boarder to Myanmar wasn't accepted. Next time will remember to book on a site that allows cancellation after 24 hours, but in the early morning panic that didn't happen. Then it turned out to be overly complicated and expensive to cross overland from India to Myanmar, so we decided to use the flights to Kuala Lumpur and come in from the South. Vizag was now in the itinerary. Get there We took a train from Puri to Khurda junction. And then transfered to a sleeper to Vizag. There is a waiting room in Khurda upstairs to charge phones and sit. Eat, drink, sleep - Sree residency was a great spot to sleep. It was cheaper online. G...

Konark and Puri: see the Sun temple

A site noted that the sun temple at Konark is in the top 10 architecturally. It was on the way to Vizag, so seemed like a good place to stop and boy was the temple impressive. Get in It's a 8 hour train ride from Kolkata to Puri. Arriving at 12am wasn't ideal as tuk tuk drivers were limited and many guest houses full or closed. Eat, drink, sleep - The Pink House is a relic from the 70s. I'm guessing the cockroach in the bathroom has been there that long as well based on its size. Rooms are very basic, somewhat clean, and ours along the walkway was loud. However for Rs. 600-800, you can't complain too much. We also had decent food there. What we did - Puri beach is sadly a mess. Children playing on the beach and using it as a toilet (you had to watch your step). There is trash all over, the only upside of which is the boys use the styrofoam to make boats. Dude asking for photo on the Puri beach.  Children playing with self-made styrofoam boats ...

gifts, donations - donations, gifts

I got a great surprise from my friend Marianne in Oct that I've just now cashed in on, a gift certificate to Kiva.org - $25 to lend to one many projects throughout the world. I donated to Malvika Shodieva. The snippet from Kiva's website is below in English and Russian for those that prefer it. "Malika Shodieva is 34. She has a secondary school education and is married with four children. For four years, Malika has been selling Tajik national textiles, which are used to make women's clothes. She has a trading point at one of the markets in Tursun-zoda. With her loan, she plans to buy a new assortment of fabric. This will give local women the chance to obtain the cloth needed to sew their national costumes. There is a demand for this among the local population. Malika plans to repay her loan over a 12-month period. Translated from Russian by Susie Armitage, Kiva volunteer. Шодиева Малика, возраст – 34 года, образование среднее, замужем, имеет 4-х детей. Малика уже в теч...
